Pre-registration programmes of education
Te Tatau o te Whare Kahu | Midwifery Council sets the Standards for Approval of Pre-Registration Midwifery Education Programmes & Accreditation of Tertiary Education Organisations.
These were last reviewed in 2019 and amendments were made to allow the programme to be delivered over a traditional four- year academic pathway or via and extended academic year (4 years delivered in 3).
The following are accredited providers of approved programmes of pre-registration education and New Zealand’s recognised schools of midwifery:
ARA | Institute of Canterbury | Te Pūkenga
The Bachelor of Midwifery is an approved pre-registration programme of education.
Delivery occurs over an extended academic year
In 2020 the Council approved a shortened programme for applicants who hold current registration and practising certificates with other health professional responsible authorities.

Auckland University of Technology | Te Wānanga Aronui o Tāmaki Makau Rau
The Bachelor of Health Science (Midwifery) is an approved pre-registration programme of education
Approved to deliver over traditional academic timeframe or through extended academic year.
Accredited until December 2024
Otago Polytechnic | Te Kura Matatini ki Otago | Te Pūkenga
The Bachelor of Midwifery is an approved pre-registration programme of education.
Delivery occurs over an extended academic year
