Continuing midwifery education for recertification

Continuing midwifery education is attendance at education of the midwife's choice.

Continuing midwifery education may include:

  • Postgraduate education
  • Short courses
  • Continuing education meetings e.g. perinatal, mortality, CTG, review etc
  • Attendance at conferences
  • Online learning

Continuing midwifery education is provided by accredited providers or the event itself is approved. For a list of accredited providers please click here

Combined emergency skills day is only provided by accredited providers.

Under the Recertification Programme, each midwife must attend a minimum of eight hours of continuing midwifery education every year.

Midwives are encouraged to ensure that individual events are approved by discussing directly with provider.

Reflections

Midwives are expected to briefly reflect on their learning and how it applies to their midwifery practice. These reflections should be kept in their portfolio and made available for audit purposes. Reflections include:

  • the midwife's understanding of the education attended
  • its applicability or otherwise to her practice and her professional development plan
  • any changes that she has made to her practice as a consequence of attending the elective education
  • any further actions or follow up that she will undertake as a consequence

Research Reflections

Written reflections on published research applicable to midwifery practice are approved as elective education. Midwives may allocate one hour per reflection to a maximum of three hours per year. To be able to claim the elective points, midwives must include a copy of their reflection in their portfolio. The reflection should include:

  • the midwife's understanding of the research
  • its applicability or otherwise to her practice and her professional development plan
  • any changes that she has made to her practice as a consequence
  • any further actions or follow up that she will undertake as a consequence of reviewing this research
