What are the on-going practice requirements?
Practising midwives are legally required to hold a practising certificate issued by the Midwifery Council. An application for a practising certificate must be made online and be paid for in full. The Council reminds midwives in its newsletter Midpoint and on the website that they must renew their practising certificates before the end of each practising year (31 March).
The Council has policy for ongoing professional development to ensure that after they are registered, midwives continue their professional education and maintain their competence to practise. Midwives, as with all health practitioners, need to be willing to commit to continuing education as part of being a registered health practitioner. Registered midwives must engage in the Recertification Programme to demonstrate that they are competent to practise within the Midwifery Scope of Practice.
